1. Marketplace Insurances

Georgia’s ACA Marketplace (exchange) is a platform where a variety of private health insurers offer health insurance for their own individual or family health coverage. 

  • who don’t qualify for Medicare or Medicaid

  • who don’t have an offer of health insurance from an employer. 

  • Depending on your income and other circumstances, you may be eligible for financial assistance that will reduce your monthly insurance premium (the amount you pay to enroll in the coverage) and possibly your out-of-pocket expenses. 

To be eligible to enroll in health coverage through the Marketplace, you must

  • Live in the United States (U.S).

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national, or be lawfully present non-citizen in the U.S.

  • Not be incarcerated

2. Medicare Insurance
 

How and when to apply for Medicare

Learn about the parts of Medicare and how and when to sign up if you are in your 60s or if you have a disability or qualifying illness.

 

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 and over. 

 

If you are under 65, you may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

 

How Medicare works

Medicare is divided into four parts

  • Medicare Part A is insurance for hospitalization, home or skilled nursing, and hospice.

  • Medicare Part B is medical insurance. 

    • Learn how to cancel Medicare Part B coverage if you no longer want it.

  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) is a private insurance option for covering hospital and medical costs.

  • Medicare Part D covers prescription medications.

Enrolling in Medicare in your 60s - There are several ways to enroll in Medicare

​

  1. If you begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits between age 62 and up to 4 months before turning 65, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when you turn 65. 

  2. If you apply for Social Security 3 months before you turn 65 or later, you can sign up for Medicare when you apply for Social Security.

    • ​​The Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Medicare begins 3 months before you turn 65 and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65--a total of 7 months. You may have to pay a penalty if you miss your Initial Enrollment Period.

  3. If you are not ready to receive Social Security benefits at 65 because you are still working, you can apply online for Medicare only. Or you may be able to wait until you retire to sign up during a special enrollment period.

3. Medicaid Insurance
 

You may be eligible for Medicaid if your income is low and you match one of the following descriptions 

  • You think you are pregnant

  • You are a child or teenager

  • You are 65 or older

  • You are legally blind

  • You have a disability

  • You need nursing home care

A. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) Medicaid

SSI is a federal program that pays monthly benefits to people with disabilities and older adults who have little or no income or resources. Learn how to apply, who is eligible, how much you could get, and how to report changes to your situation.

B. QMB (Qualified Medicare Beneficiary) Medicaid

The QMB (Qualified Medicare Beneficiary) program covers out-of-pocket costs for those enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid

C. TEFRA/Katie Beckett Medicaid

 Katie Beckett Medicaid Program (KB), permits the state to ignore family income for certain children who are disabled. It provides benefits to certain children 18 years of age or less who qualify as disabled individuals and who live at home rather than in an institution. These children must meet specific criteria to be covered.

Qualification is not based on medical diagnosis; instead it is based on the institutional level of care the child requires.

4. PeachCare for Kids®

is a comprehensive health care program for uninsured children living in Georgia.

  • PeachCare for Kids® requires verification of income at application and annual renewal. Eligibility is dependent on the successful completion of this documentation. Go to Income Verification for more information.

  • To be eligible for PeachCare for Kids® your child(ren) must be a U.S. Citizen or fall within an eligible legal immigrant category. Original documents may be required in order to verify the status of the child(ren) for whom you are applying. Parents are not required to verify their own citizenship or immigration status.   • To be eligible for PeachCare for Kids® your child(ren) must not have current coverage, or be eligible for Medicaid.
